Obama Administration Declares War on CIA

Gary Bauer reports:

Behind the scenes at the White House a power struggle has been waged between CIA Director Leon Panetta and Attorney General Eric Holder regarding the prosecution of Bush-era CIA officials. Holder won, and has announced the appointment of special prosecutor John Durham to carry out the investigation.

Imagine working at the CIA and hearing yesterday that an investigation headed by the Attorney General of the United States would be targeting you and your co-workers. How many of these honorable men and women went home to their families last night and called a defense attorney for fear that they might be sent to prison? Even more disturbing is that Obama and Holder personally told CIA employees and members of Congress four months ago that no such prosecution would take place. Once again the president lied to the American people and to the men and women who serve in our security agencies. Here’s what Obama said then:

“You know, there have been some conversations that I’ve had with senior folks here at Langley, in which, I think, people have expressed understandable anxiety and concern. So I want to make a point that I just made in the smaller group. I understand that it’s hard when you are asked to protect the American people against people who have no scruples, and would willingly and gladly kill innocents. Al-Qaeda’s not constrained by a Constitution. Many of our adversaries are not constrained by a belief in freedom of speech or representation in court or rule of law. So don’t be discouraged by what’s happened in the last few weeks. Don’t be discouraged that we have to acknowledge potentially we’ve made some mistakes. That’s how we learn.”

In April, Eric Holder said, “It would be unfair to prosecute dedicated men and women working to protect America for conduct that was sanctioned in advance by the Justice Department.” Long Island Congressman Peter King, the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, responded to Holder’s sudden about-face, saying, “It’s disgraceful. You wonder which side they’re on. It’s a total breach of faith, and either the president is intentionally caving to the left wing of his party or he’s lost control of his administration.”

Former Vice President Cheney, one of the biggest advocates of the CIA’s enhanced interrogation techniques, said this in a statement on Holder’s decision: “The activities of the CIA in carrying out the policies of the Bush Administration were directly responsible for defeating all efforts by al Qaeda to launch further mass casualty attacks against the United States. The people involved deserve our gratitude. They do not deserve to be targets of political investigations or prosecutions.”

To justify the decision to prosecute CIA officials, Holder authorized the release of a classified 2004 report detailing the treatment of detainees. What you won’t find the “mainstream” media about this report is the effectiveness of the interrogations and the critical intelligence information gathered. For instance, in the documents titled “Khalid Sheikh Mohammad: Pre-eminent Source on Al-Qaeda” and “Detainee Reporting Pivotal for the War Against Al-Qaeda,” multiple plots against the United States were uncovered. These include:

  • Identities of 70 people capable attacking Western installations.
  • Identities of participants planning possible Al-Qaeda anthrax attacks.
  • Identities of the creators of the bomb used in the 2002 attack on a U.S. consulate in Pakistan.
  • A plot to attack Camp Lemonier, a U.S. military base located in the nation of Djibouti in East Africa.

The report went on to say that “Detainee reporting has helped thwart a number of Al-Qaeda plots to attack targets in the West and elsewhere.” These plots included flying planes into buildings on the West Coast, setting off a series of bombs in U.S. cities and a plan to employ a network of Pakistanis with the capability of attacking railroad tracks, gas stations and the Brooklyn Bridge. The evidence shows that these interrogations were essential to ensuring the safety of the American people. But the Obama Administration disregards their effectiveness. It releases terror suspects while hoping to jail the people who protect us.

I believe Obama will regret this decision politically. The American people will not like seeing employees of an important agency like the CIA attacked and ridiculed for actions that protected our well-being. But, the ramifications of this decision are more important than politics. Some of our strongest allies in the “war on terror” are mentioned in these reports. Why would friendly governments want to help us again if we go against our word and release the details of confidential documents highlighting their role in intelligence gathering?

Prosecuting members of the CIA also will affect the recruitment and retention of dedicated patriots and professionals. People may be reluctant to work for the CIA if they feel they could be subject to partisan criminal prosecutions. Current members of the CIA will be much more cautious when dealing with detainees who know critical intelligence information. The Obama Administration’s decision puts innocent American lives at risk and makes another 9/11 more likely.

Prominent Democrat Fundraiser Arrested

Media outlets are reporting that Hassan Nemazee, chairman of Nemazee Capital Corporation, was arrested at the Newark International Airport attempting to board a flight to Rome. He is charged with attempting to defraud Citigroup of nearly $75 million. But most press reports are glossing over Nemazee’s political connections. Like criminals R. Allen Stanford and Bernie Madoff, Nemazee is a major Democrat Party fundraiser.

In 2006, Nemazee served as the national finance director for the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee. Last year, he raised at least $100,000 for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, and after the primary, he raised half a million dollars for Barack Obama. In recent years, Nemazee has personally given more than $850,000 to various congressional Democrats, including Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid.

Pistol Packers Beware!

I fully support the God-given right of a man to defend himself--yes, even with lethal weapons. In no way would I want to hinder or diminish that right. Someone out there exercising his God-given, 2nd Amendment right may even save my life someday--and for that, I would be thankful! However, I worry about folks who are just itching to brandish their concealed carry pistol and "blow away the bad guy". If the threat needs to be stopped, by all means stop it. If in the process, the bad guy gets blown away, that is unfortunate for the bad guy. However, using lethal force should be your last option. Here's a great article that offers protective wisdom for those who are packin'.

Rules for Concealed Carry

Xavier's Five Rules for Concealed Carry (From his Blog: Nurse with a Gun)

We all should know the Four Rules of Firearms Safety. They should be ingrained in our bones. Recently I read of the Five Rules of Concealed Carry. It was a good start, but did not quite make the grade. I have borrowed heavily from them though, and present my own Rules of Concealed Carry here.

1. Your concealed handgun is for protection of life only.
Draw your concealed firearm solely in preparation to protect yourself or an innocent third party from the wrongful and life threatening criminal actions of another. A CCW license does not give you any greater rights or responsibilities than any other citizen. It merely provides you with the means of legally carrying a firearm to protect your own life or the lives of others.

2. Know exactly when you can use your gun.
A criminal adversary must have, or reasonably appear to have:
a. the ability to inflict serious bodily injury (he is armed, reasonably appears to be armed with a deadly weapon, or a considerable disparity of force exists),
b. the opportunity to inflict serious bodily harm (he is physically positioned to harm you), and
c. his intent (hostile actions or words) indicates that he means to place you in jeopardy -- to do you serious or fatal physical harm.
When all three of these "attack potential" elements are in place simultaneously, then you are facing a reasonably perceived deadly threat that can justify an emergency deadly force response.

3. If you can run away -- RUN!
Just because you are armed does not necessarily mean you must confront a bad guy at gunpoint. Develop your "situation awareness" skills so you can be alert to detect and avoid trouble altogether. Keep in mind that if you successfully evade a potential confrontation, the single negative consequence involved might be your bruised ego, which should heal with mature rationalization. By contrast, if you force a confrontation you risk the possibility of you or a family member being killed or suffering lifelong crippling/disfiguring physical injury, criminal liability and/or financial ruin from a civil lawsuit. Flee if you can, fight only as a last resort.

4. Display your CCW, be prepared to go to jail.
You should expect to be arrested by police at gunpoint, and be charged with a crime anytime your concealed handgun is seen by another citizen in public, regardless of how unintentional, innocent or justified the situation might seem. Choose a method of carry that keeps your gun reliably hidden from public view at all times.

You have no control over how a stranger will react to seeing (or learning about) your concealed handgun. He or she might become alarmed and report you to police as a "man or woman with a gun." Depending on his or her feelings about firearms, this person might be willing to maliciously embellish his or her story in an attempt to have your gun seized by police or to get you arrested. An alarmed citizen who reports a "man with a gun" is going to be more credible to police than you when you are stopped because you match the suspect's description, and you are found to have a concealed handgun in your possession. Under these circumstances, you have been accused, apprehended, and are in a defensive position. If you must draw your gun, make certain you are the first to notify police.
Before you deliberately expose your gun in public, ask yourself: "Is this worth going to jail for?" The only time this question should warrant a "yes" response is when an adversary has at least, both ability and intent, and is actively seeking the opportunity to do you great harm.

5. Don't let your emotions get the best of you.
Develop and practice self control. If, despite your best efforts to the contrary, you do get into some kind of heated dispute with another person while you are armed, never mention, imply or exhibit your gun for the purpose of intimidation or one-upmanship. You will simply make a bad situation worse -- for yourself. You can carry a gun, or you can have a temper. You may even do both for a while, but it will not last very long.

With the growing population of gun toters, it is imperative that we establish a few simple guidelines to help introduce others into the world of concealed carry. These five are the best I've found.

Xavier has also written "The Concealed Carry Creed," which is worth reading and reciting from time to time:

  • My weapon is for the protection of my life and the lives of others. That is its sole purpose. It does not confer rights, responsibilities or authority greater than that of other citizens. It merely allows me to protect life.
  • I will seek never to have to use my weapon. If I can avoid conflict, I will. If I can resolve conflict, I will. If I can escape danger, I will. If I am forced to bring my weapon to bear and use it, I will.
  • I will acquire superior training with my weapon. It is not the weapon that saves lives, but my effective use of the weapon. I will ensure my training is sound, my knowledge is current, and my mind is prepared.
  • I will know, understand, and obey all laws and ordinances concerning my weapon no matter where I happen to be. Failure to do so harms all who seek to legally carry an effective means of self protection.
  • I will know and follow the Four Rules of safe gun handling. I am a member of a growing community that must foster and teach safe and responsible gun handling if the community is to survive.
